Weddings are arguably one of life’s most glamorous rites of passage.
In both East and West, wedding ceremonies abound with hopeful and joyful sentiment.
To express those feelings, colors, shapes, and patterns connoting happiness were
used in the wedding attire that beautifully adorned the bride, in the various implements used
in the wedding ceremony,
and all of the myriad details that set the tone of the nuptial
occasion. In this exhibition,
we present bridal attire and wedding paraphernalia from the
Edo period through the modern period, highlighting the beauty and sophistication
characteristic of that era.
